INTRO Institutional success factors

The distribution of organic farming and its institutional success factors: an analysis based on regions in which organically farmed areas are particularly dense.

Start: 07/2002
End: 03/2004

The Project made an attempt at filling the knowledge gap regarding endogenous institutional factors for successful development of organic farming in a regional perspective and its relationship to external institutional driving forces or obstacles. The analysis aimed at illustrating the relevance of institutional conditions that have facilitated the emergence and sustainability of organic farming in regions with a particularly high density of organically managed farmsteads. Based on approaches enabling a better understanding of such supportive factors the Project discussed the question as to how these could be strengthened by political intervention. Inadequate institutional support turned out to be a bottleneck for the development of organic farming, even when favourable farming conditions existed. In addition, formal and informal institutions which play a role in this context were part of the analysis.
