Impact of Institutional Change and Governance Reform on Farmers’ Behaviour in Grassland Use - Comparative studies of Ningxia and Inner Mongolia, China

The main objective of the proposed research is to understand formal and informal institutions and their influence on local people’s action about grassland governance. Grazing policies and grassland property right regulation are considered to be formal institution. Tradition, ethnic and culture are considered to be informal institution in this research. This research would hopefully contribute to local grassland governance as well as to improve related policies to balance local people’s livelihood and ecological sustainability of grassland. Both Inner Mongolia and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region will be integrated into the research. The two regions possess the largest grasslands in China, grazing is the most popular livelihood for local people. In addition, the extraordinary differences of religion and ethnic structure between these two regions giving prominence to the impact of institution on grassland management.
