Analysis of Economic Driving Forces in Crop Protection. A case study of apple production in the European Union

Start: May 07
End: July 11

Within the work of the European Network for Durable Exploitation of Crop Protection Strategies (ENDURE), which among others aims to develop innovative farming systems that are less reliable on pesticide use, a three-steps analysis of socio-economic driving forces in crop protection is conducted to facilitate the implementation of these sustainable strategies. This analysis gathers on: 1) the classification of crop protection strategies currently implemented in the European Union in function of two dimensions of pesticide use, the quantity and the type of products applied, 2) the explanation of the causality of these crop protection strategies by understanding pesticide use decisions, and 3) the evaluation of policy options and elaboration of applicable policy recommendations.
