Villamayor-Tomas, Sergio, Irene Iniesta-Arandia and Matteo Roggero. 2020. “Are generic and specific adaptation institutions always relevant? An archetype analysis of drought adaptation in Spanish irrigation systems.” In Ecology and Society 25(1):32. https://doi.org/10.5751/ES-11329-250132

The paper combines hierarchical cluster analysis and qualitative comparative analysis to study successful drought adaptation in 37 irrigation associations in Spain. The analysis distinguishes between two types of irrigation systems, the “Asian” and the “American” type, and tests how “generic” adaptation institutions  (monitoring and collective choice arrangements) and “specific” ones (water transfers) combine in order to explain successful drought adaptation. It finds that some combinations of generic and specific adaptations are shared across irrigation type, while other combinations are not. Also, the Asian type of irrigation system shows a greater diversity of paths towards successful adaptation.
