Sustainable Land Management and Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change for the Western Siberian Corn-belt

Start: 08/2011
End: 07/2016

As an impact of global warming considerable changes regarding the use of natural resources in Western Siberia are anticipated, which will be associated with corresponding changes in agricultural structures. This project aims to provide basic knowledge and practical management tools to cope with these far-reaching transformations. We will assess and evaluate the impact of different agricultural land-use types and intensities on various eco-system goods and services such as carbon sequestration, soil fertility, water resources, and biodiversity in the Tyumen region. The gained information will be used for (i) developing improved long-term sustainable agricultural land-use practices at farm level, and for (ii) the definition of priority areas for different land-use types and intensities under various scenarios of climate change at landscape level. To apply the project results in an operational planning framework, implementation and monitoring tools will be developed which explicitly take into account institutional settings and governance structures including socio-economic requirements and constraints. All research and development and implementation activities will be carried out in close cooperation with regional and local stakeholders from the fields of science, administration, and practice. The project results are expected tom be transferable to neighboring regions facing similar future issues of land management.
