Analysis of Market Potential and Government Policy for Renewable Energy in Hyderabad

Start: January 2010
End: January 2013

Hyderabad is one of the emerging mega cities of the world. It is expected to reach 10.5 million inhabitants by 2015. Economic and population growth in the city has led to greater consumption of fossil fuels. Given the risk of climate change and to ensure energy sustainability, a fundamental shift in energy consumption pattern from conventional source to renewable source is needed. However promotion of renewable energy in the energy market cannot be relied on market mechanism alone since renewable energy is not cost competitive and various externalities associated with both renewable and non renewable energy are not taken care of in the market energy price. Due to this market failure, policy intervention is needed. With this objective in mind the study seeks to analyze market potential using Non-market valuation methods viz. Choice Experiments and Contingent Valuation Method. It will also explore various regulatory mechanisms best suited for the promotion of renewable energy within the constraint of energy sustainability.
