Hortinlea

Hortinlea (Horticultural Innovation and Learning for Improved Nutrition and Livelihood in East Africa) is an interdisciplinary research project addressing food security in East Africa, particularly in Kenya. A total of 19 East African and German universities and research institutes work collaboratively to produce and distribute knowledge in order to increase horticultural production and consumption, especially of African leafy indigenous vegetables. The project aims to improve the livelihood and nutritional situation of the rural and urban poor.

HU Component: Improving livelihoods and socio-economic conditions of African leafy indigenous vegetables value-chain actors.

The HU component assessed the various challenges and opportunities faced by African leafy indigenous vegetable (AIV) value-chain actors. This focused on topics of poverty, food security, vulnerability in terms of exposure to shocks and decision-making of African leafy indigenous vegetable producers. The HU component conducted the HORTINLEA panel survey in rural, peri-urban and urban locations of Kenya, interviewing more than 1500 AIV producers, traders and consumers along the value-chain. The household survey was conducted in three consecutive years, 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Project Duration: 2013 - 2018

HU-Partners: Leibniz Universität Hannover, Egerton University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

Funding: HORTINLEA is embedded in a funding initiative for global food security (GlobE) of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
