Enhancing food and nutrition security through promotion of edible insects value chains in Eastern Africa (Ento-Economy)

Work package: Enterprises, value chains, markets and consumers

Project Brief:

Insects contribute to the human food chain either by direct consumption or indirectly as feed for domestic animals when farmed as mini-livestock in East Africa. However, these economic potentials are not harnessed fully because the insect value chains are little developed. This project aims to contribute to addressing malnutrition through developing sustainable insect-based value chains for improved food and nutrition security in Kenya and Uganda.

The work package analyses business models and entrepreneurial skills for commercial production and marketing, especially for small and medium sized edible insect enteprises and consumer behaviour to develop marketing approaches to increase the acceptance and use of insects in Kenya and Uganda.
