The FoodBerlin Summer School 2019 „Sustainable Diets“ June 30 through July 12, 2019

The FoodBerlin research network (www.foodberlin.de) connects 40 university working groups and research institutions in the Berlin area in order to intensify cooperation in research and teaching. The joint research focusses on sustainable design of food production, processing and marketing. In order to interest international students in working in Berlin or perform their doctoral studies here, we will hold a two-week summer school with the topic "Sustainable Diets". This interdisciplinary topic combines agricultural and natural sciences, veterinary medicine, as well as social and economic sciences.

In the first week, the 18 participants will be familiarised with the following topics in courses:

-  Social and political framework conditions for sustainability -  Agricultural production under the conditions of climate change -  Intensive crop production -  Animal health and welfare -  Food safety -  Psychology of nutrition -  Overeating as a problem in industrialized and emerging countries -  Malnutrition and hidden hunger. -  Challenges of world nutrition.

Lecturers are highly qualified scientists from the FoodBerlin network who describe general aspects of their field of work and illustrate them with their own research.  Students and doctoral candidates from the working groups organised in FoodBerlin also take part in this course week, so that contacts can be established between scholarship holders and young Berlin scientists.

In the second week, small groups of 3 participants each work on concrete topics in connection with projects of the FoodBerlin working groups or carry out experiments in practical courses. Lectures by the renowned speakers Roberta Sonnino (Cardiff University, UK) and Frank Fischer (Rutgers University, NJ, USA) round off the scientific program.

Joint excursions in and around Berlin as well as an attractive cultural and social program familiarize the participants with German culture and create personal connections.

The 2019 host is Prof. Dr. Peter H. Feindt (Chair of Agricultural and Food Policy) of the Thaer Institute of the Faculty of Life Sciences.
