7th International Research Workshop on Archetype Analysis in Sustainability Workshop for the first time overseas
This year’s 7th International Research Workshop on Archetype Analysis in Sustainability Research was held the first time outside of Europe at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) in Washington DC, United States. The hybrid event took place from June 16th-18th. Remote participation was possible to reach as many researchers as possible and to be inclusive for participants who had visa issues or faced other administrative obstacles. The two-day workshop was facilitated by the College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences (CAUSES) and offered panels which covered a wide range of topics from tropical forests/deforestation and governance to more general thematic panels about agriculture, climate and resource governance. As always, advancing methodological questions of archetype analysis were at the workshop’s core. Particularly two methodological presentations aimed at advancing the topic, namely one about dynamic archetype analysis and another one about knowledge cumulation using archetype analysis, offered room for discussing strengths and weaknesses of the method. Beside full papers, also paper pitches were presented to enhance and develop the method further. Also, this offered younger scholars to present their ongoing research.
Thematically, at this year’s workshop a strong focus was on archetypes in urban areas with two full sessions. The emerging field of artificial intelligence (AI) research was covered by a topical discussion group about testing archetype analysis with artificial data. The workshop closed on Tuesday with a fieldtrip to the urban farms of CAUSES in Washington DC.
For everyone who missed this year’s workshop: the 8th workshop will take place in Braunschweig, Germany, hosted by the Thünen Institute in 2025.
