International Agricultural Trade and Development

New group format for master thesis supervision established!

This semester, IATD supervises six master theses on EU climate policies in the land use sectors in close exchange with the think tank Agora Agriculture. Harald Grethe, head of the group and director of Agora Agriculture and Wiebke Nowack, PhD student at HU and employee of Agora Agriculture, take care of the supervision as a team. About once per month, joint meetings are offered to students involving further Agora Agriculture staff. Current thesis topics include:

  • Three peatland topics: a discourse analysis on re-wetting peatland in Germany, a comparative analysis of peatland re-wetting in Poland and Germany, an analysis of the opportunity cost of rewetting peatland in Germany (Cora Petrick, Martyna Armijak and Niklas Domke).
  • Two LULUCF topics: methods and implications of reporting and accounting on GHG-emissions from forests under the EU’s LULUCF regulation and EU member states’ positions on and interests in the LULUCF regulation (Emily Burk and Pawel Polchtchak).
  • One thesis on the issue of permanence in carbon farming (Sangjun Park).

A continuation of the format in the next semesters is planned. Specific topics are selected in exchange between the students and the team of advisors.

Master students interested in being part of the next group writing their theses with us can contact Wiebke Nowack (
