New paper of Aditya Korekallu Srinivasa and Dagmar Mithöfer: Understanding Farmers' Policy Preferences for Solar-Powered Irrigation Systems in Karnataka, India: A Choice Experiment Approach
In this new paper, we use discrete choice experiment within ‘embedded QUAN (qual)’ research design, using data from 500 farmers in Karnataka to reveal that farmers strongly prefer solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) bundled with long-term credit and extended warranty periods. Extending the concept of innovation bundling, our findings highlight the importance of socio-technical bundling which can address liquidity constraints and temporarily offset the risk and uncertainty due to underdeveloped local repair service infrastructure. The study offers practical insights for designing farmer-centric policies that align with real-world preferences to scale SPIS in India.
