Development of the basis for a national monitoring of animal welfare (subproject 8)
Animal welfare in livestock husbandry is a controversial topic. At the same time, there is very little information on the status quo in the keeping of small ruminants in Germany.
Data on animal-based indicators (animal health, behavior, affective state), resource-based indicators (such as space, feeding place design) and management-related (type of feeding, grazing, animal control) are scarce or only sporadically and not systematically collected.
The reasons for this are that the data is not collected in a standardized way and is therefore not comparable, only certain production directions and animal species are recorded or there is no legal basis for an animal welfare-related evaluation.
The aim of the project is to develop the basis for regular, indicator-based monitoring and reporting on the status of the animal welfare of sheep and goats in Germany and how it changes over time.
This animal welfare monitoring should take into account the various dimensions of animal welfare in the relevant stages of the animals' lives (keeping, slaughtering, transport).
