International Master in Biodiversity Management and Research

The advanced Masters Course „ Biodiversity Management and Research” is an interdisciplinary international degree programme, which is jointly offered by the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and the University of Namibia (UNAM).

Since 2010 the Masters Course is a core unit of the DAAD funded “Quality network biodiversity in Sub-Sahara Africa”, which is based on multiple academic partnerships with universities of different countries in Sub-Sahara Africa.

The Masters Course is primarily concerned with ecological research and nature conservation aspects with regard to management, conservation and sustainability of biodiversity. In the focus of interest are the measurability und the assessment of biodiversity as well as the effects of human land use strategies on complex interrelations of the ecosystem. Particularly interesting are questions regarding contrasts of human land use, edge effects and problems with designations and development of conservation areas.

The students will aquire the knowledge as well as the scientific instruments and methods to individually develop, implement and assess approaches to solve scientific problems and questions. Possible career prospects can be found in the field of nature and resource conservation, at international organizations (e.g. FAO, UNO), at ministries for environment and tourism, at directories of national parks and at research institutions and natural history museums.

The Masters Course is organized modularly and has a duration of two years (4 semester). It is subdivided into one year of class work and one year of practical work including the Master project. The courses are taught at the UNAM. The principle teaching language is English. Special courses, practical work and projects as well as the Masters project can be realized at relevant institutions in National Museum, planning authorities, desert research institute), in other SADC countries or in Germany (e.g. Museum for Natural History at the HU, research station Linde.
