My dissertation project explores which governance modes for rural services are currently at work in rural areas of transition and developing countries. Using the example of the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan, I will try to understand how rural men and women organize access to farm services and which of these modes of service organization work best for poor people. In oder to facilitate the scaling-up of modes of service governance that have a potential to benefit particularly poor people, I will develop strategic advice that is both, specific to Kyrgyzstan, but also generalizable to other cases. The theoretical perspective of the research is imbedded in institutional economics. A governance perspective will be used as the analytical lens of the work. A series of case studies in different regions in rural Kyrgyzstan will provide the empirical basis of the research. Collaboration partners are the National Academy of Science in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan and the International Food Policy Institute (IFPRI), Washington. The research is part of the project “Making Rural Services Work for the Poor” financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), Germany. |
