Research Interests

  • Philipp von Gall analyses in his doctoral thesis the political decision-making process for animal welfare and protection policies in Germany during the last decades. He looks at the institutional framework of decision-making in this field and at the ethical-theoretical grounds of the arguments being used. He is especially interested in the critical role natural-scientific evidences play in justifying measures and policies. For the analysis of ethical framework of decision making, not only political strategy papers and open political discussions, but also position papers of lobby und interest groups and scientific advisory panels are taken into account.
  • Methodologically, Philipp applies mostly qualitative and theory driven analytical approaches. As concept he applies Grounded Theory, allowing conceptual interpretation to emerge from empirical data and to gradually develop and if necessary readapt hypotheses throughout the research process.
