Research Interests

Broader research interests include among others, rural development, rural-urban linkages, adaptation and mitigation strategies of different groups of people in the face of changing climatic conditions, development policy analysis (ex ante and ex post), environmental pollution and abatement and sustainability of the commons (traditional, global and new).

Current Research

Studies on collective action (CA) in natural resource management (NRM) have been conducted to understand the factors that determine an individual’s participation in NRM and to know what leads to the success of some and the failure of the other groups in CA. A number of determining factors are suggested by theory and tested by empirical studies in this field. In practice, however, NRM initiatives are often designed with an important additional objective, which is poverty reduction. The present study focuses on watershed development projects in India to understand the influence of property rights and other institutions on an individual’s participation in CA and to assess the impact of CA institutions for NRM on poverty alleviation and equity. A mixture of quantitative and qualitative methods is being employed in the study.
