Environmental and Resource Economics III

Objective

    Students will…

    • Develop an understanding of ecological economics and conceptualisations of social-ecological issues;
    • Develop an understanding of the role of institutions for environmental and natural resource problems;
    • Have basic knowledge of important data gathering and analysis approaches for empirical institutional analysis (qualitative and quantitative methods and their combination);
    • Have gained an understanding of the linkages between research design, theories, frameworks and methods when analysing specific environmental and natural resource problems;
    • Apply their knowledge to structure the analysis of an empirical problem.

Content

    The course introduces an understanding of the interactions between the environment and humans that fundamentally differs from conventional environmental economics. It is founded on ecological and institutional economics. The course covers conceptualisations of social ecological systems and focuses on institutions, frameworks for analysis, and theories of institutional change. In addition research design and methodologies for researching institutions are discussed.  An excursion to the “Biosphärenreservat Flusslandschaft Elbe-Brandenburg” is included. The excursion area will provide the examples for which students will subsequently be asked to develop a research design.
