Tilaye Teklewold Deneke (PhD) has been assigned as Director of Agricultural Economics, Extension and Gender Research Directorate of the Amhara Regional Agricultural Reserach Institute. 15/05/2012
- Dr. Andreas Thiel, who worked at the Division of Resource Economics as Lecture since 2007, has been awarded a Guest Professorship in Environmental Governance by the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture ah HU Berlin. The new Professorship can already count on several projects and collaborators, for example, working on water management in Mozambique, climate change adaptation in Germany, the interlinkages between institutionalisms and political ecology and recent transformations of natural resource governance in the EU. - The „Working Group on Field Experiments in Agricultural and Resource Economics” of the Division of Resource Economics organizes a methodical workshop on economic experiments under the guidance of Marco Janssen. The number of participants is limited. Interested parties (master students and researchers) can apply until 30 April 2012 at expgroup@hu-berlin.de. - Vinish Kathuria wins The Mahalanobis Memorial Medal: Vinish Kathuria, School of Management IIT Bombay, has been awarded the prestigious Mahalanobis Memorial Medal for the current round. This award is given by The Indian Econometric Society every two years in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of economics. The other co-winners of this round are Kausik Chaudhuri (Madras School of Economics) and Esther Duflo (MIT). Previous winners include prominent names like Jagdish Bhagwati, Columbia (1974), Amartya Sen, Harvard (1976), Pranab Bardhan, UC Berkely (1980), Peter Diamond, Yale (1980) and Abhijit Banerjee, MIT (2000) among others. Vinish Kathuria has worked extensively in the areas of Industrial Organization and Environmental Economics and publishes in reputed journals like Ecological Economics and World Development. He is currently in the Ph.D advisory committee of some doctoral students under the Sustainable Hyderabad Megacity program at The Division of Resource Economics, Humboldt University Berlin. 26/03/2012

- Herr Dr. Aseffa Seyoum arbeitet seit Januar 2012 am College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA) an der University of Illinois auf dem Gebiet der „Genetic Resources Policy Analysis“ als Post Doctoral Research Fellow. Herr Seyoum hat 2009 zum Thema „Mikroökonomische Auswirkungen von Maßnahmen zum Schutz der genetischen Ressourcen von wildem Kaffee in Südwest Äthiopien: Forstzonierung und ökonomische Anreize für den Umweltschutz“ am Fachgebiet Ressourcenökonomie promoviert. Das Fachgebiet Ressourcenökonomie gratuliert seinem Ehemaligen zu seiner neuen Funktion und wünscht ihm weiterhin viel Erfolg! 24/02/2012

Upcoming Events of Megacity Project 2012/2013:
June 2012 National Workshop
The Megacity Project will present its three day National Workshop. We invite PhDs and PostDocs doing their research on megacities to participate in the Young Researchers Day (1st workshop day). Paper contributions will be published in a Special Issue of the Emerging Megacities Series. Further details and the "Call for papers" will follow. The second day of the Workshop will be used for the internal advisory board meeting in order to discuss the next strategic steps for the Megacity Project. Lastly, the third Workshop day is dedicated to "Institutional Change", with the participation of well-known researchers from all over the world. Further details will be communicated soon!
October 2012: International Megacity Project Workshop Hyderabad
This Workshop is proposed to deal with three key analytical steps of the Research Agenda of Megacity Project: (a) Monitoring, Evaluation and Networking of the Pilot Projects to synthesise outcomes on Crafting Rules by Discourse (b) Appraisal and Implementation of Capacity Building Measures within all Pilot Projects(c) Towards formulating a Perspective Action Plan (PAP)for Hyderabad. However, the focus of the Workshop will be on the first two parts of the Agenda, where as the formulation and declaration of the PAP for Hyderabad will be the task of the final conference in March 2013.
March 2013: Final Conference of International Megacity Project Hyderabad
This conference will deal with the results of the last analytical step - Formulation and Declaration of a PAP for Hyderabad. It is proposed to keep the results of the Megacity Project Research in the form of a Perspective Action Plan for Hyderabad for discussion. Apart from scientific discussions, the focus will be on the necessary institutional innovation and governance changes in facilitating the implementation of PAP. Commitments for PAP - evolved out of the joint implementation of this 5 year Project - by key Actors from the local Government, private, public and civil society will be the highlight of this conference. - Im Rahmen des "Visitors Program of the Federal Republic of Germany" der Internationalen Grünen Woche 2012 findet im Dekanatssaal der Landwirtschaftlich-Gärtnerischen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin am 20.1.2012 um 14 Uhr eine vom Fachgebiet Ressourcenökonomie organisierte Diskussionrunde zum Thema "Insight and experience gained from German-international research cooperation in the field of agricultural and sustainability studies in the “Sustainable Hyderabad Project” statt. - Erste Einstein Junior Fellows gefördert: Die Einstein Stiftung Berlin fördert ab 1. Januar 2012 die ersten zwei „Einstein Junior Fellows“. Der Geograph Tobias Kümmerle forscht zum Thema Landnutzungswandel und dessen Auswirkungen auf die Artenvielfalt. Im Forschungsvorhaben von Volkswirt Andreas Thiel geht es um die Steuerung natürlicher Ressourcensysteme. Beide Nachwuchswissenschaftler arbeiten an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. - Neue Publikation: Christine Werthmann hat im Dezember 2011 Ihre Dissertation mit dem Titel „Understanding Institutional Arrangements for Community-Based Natural Resource Managment in the Mekong Delta of Cambodia and Vietnam. A mixed methods approach“ veröffentlicht. Die Disputation fand am 18. August 2011 an der Philipps-Universität Marburg statt.

- Erfolgreiches Wassermanagement braucht auch in der Mongolei Mitbestimmung und finanzielle Mittel: Organisatorische Reformen im Wassermanagement sollten mit Abgabenreformen einhergehen. Zu diesem vorläufigen Ergebnis kommen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler des Deutschen Instituts für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), der Landwirtschaftlich-Gärtnerischen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und des Helmholtz-Zentrums für Umweltforschung (UFZ). Für die Studie wurden die Veränderungen in Portugal mit denen in der Mongolei verglichen, da beide Länder grundlegende Reformen im Wassersektor hinter sich haben. Ziel war es herauszufinden, was Nicht-EU-Länder beim Wassermanagement von den Reformen der letzten Jahre in Europa lernen könnten. - In-between 22. and 26 August 2011 the Division of Resource Economics and collaboration with the Division for Horticultural Production and VÖW, and SNEEP held a Summer Academy on Sustainable Value Chains. 25 Students from all over Germany attended and worked on problem identification and solutions for value chains in food production, renewable energy and textiles. - Jens Rommel has been awarded with the Albrecht-Daniel-Thaer-Award 2011: During this year’s summer party of the faculty on 6 July 2011, Jens Rommel will receive the Albrecht-Daniel-Thaer-Award. The award promotes young researchers in the area of agricultural, horticultural and fisheries sciences. Since 1996, it is awarded for excellent PhD dissertations and degrees (B.Sc., M.Sc., and Diploma) at the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The title of Jens Rommel’s thesis is: „Ethnic Heterogeneity, Economic Inequality, and External Leadership in Group-based Finance: Evidence from Uganda“ (at the Division of Professor Hanisch "Cooperative Sciences"). 10/06/2011
